About
Gimuy/Cairns

Cairns is the gateway to the Wet Tropics of Queensland, and the only place in Australia where two UNESCO World Heritage areas sit side by side—the Great Barrier Reef and the Wet Tropics Rainforest.

The region is also rich in Aboriginal culture, with more than 20 Rainforest Aboriginal groups in the Wet Tropics, who continue to embed traditional knowledge within contemporary management practices to ensure the region is protected for future generations.

Cairns offers easy access to world-class snorkeling, diving, and island adventures, immersive rainforest experiences, scenic and cultural tours, and a vibrant food and arts scene. Cairns CBD is a short 10 minute drive from the airport.

Within our local community, the Centre is a sponsor of Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, and the Centre provides funding to look after “Sharon’s” rehabilitation after she was found with floating syndrome. The Great Barrier Reef is home to six of the world’s seven species of marine turtles. A number of these are seriously threatened by a diverse range of natural and, more significantly, human induced factors. The rehabilitation facilities are located on Fitzroy Island and James Cook University.

The Cairns Convention Centre is a founding partner of Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef. Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef is the world’s first collaborative movement for the Reef – a unique, data-driven and united approach to Reef conservation. The organisation undertakes the Great Reef Census to survey the far reaches of the 2,300-kilometre Great Barrier Reef.

Reforest Program – The Cairns Convention Centre works with TTNQ on measuring the carbon footprint of events at the Centre to feed into the destination measurement. Through the program delegates help eliminate the event’s carbon impact by supporting localised tree planting and revegetation programs, like the endangered Mabi rainforest which is the home of the Lumholtz tree kangaroo on the Atherton Tablelands
